Hi Margaret! Thanks for the info.

Due to Irene, the roundup scheduled for tomorrow will have to be postponed (80-100% chance of rain Saturday morning). The best info to gather is the phone number (which must be accurately recorded or it will trace to the wrong people) and what kind of sign it is (junk cars, real estate, etc.)

We're collecting this information for a database we already have established so we can go after the "heavy hitters" first and get Streets and L&I after those individuals.

Currently the job of bandit sign removal is at the Right of Way Unit at the Streets Department which isn't staffed to levels sufficient enough to attack the problem, so we need volunteers. NKCDC as well as other civics across the city (Mayfair Civic, Tacony Quality of Life Council) are also collecting signs and information.

We will do roundups to populate our database with the phone numbers and clean our neighborhoods and then later roundups we will be doing more to identify offenders to the City for L&I fines. I am working with Joan Krajewski's office at City Hall. Many of the bandit sign posters (especially for the junk cars) happen to live in the Northeast and in Bucks County.

Bandit Signs...I am encouraged by your efforts--don't give up!
I live near Franklin Mills Mall and have been removing signs since the end of 2006. I have been keeping logs and to date have removed 8,012. Tom Conway, Deputy Managing Director calls me his partner, but the city will NOT fine people when citizens remove signs. The Legal Department does not allow that.
Last night at the 8th District PSA3 meeting, I asked for HELP...I brought 30 signs with me, most of them JUNK CARS with the phone #267 229 1970 and threw them on the floor. "I NEED HELP" I asked Lt. John Boyle from the 8th Police District to see if the police can help me get in touch with the Streets Department (as of Jan 2011 they are responsible). My efforts to speak to anyone or have someone call me have failed.
I have met three other people who are removing signs too and probably working harder than the city employees.
For the high signs, I use a pruning pole. I cut the signs in half before I put them in recycling so no one can remove them and use them again.
